Thanksgiving Table Decorations

On the small farm where I grew up, Thanksgiving was truly a celebration of the harvest. Our feast day preparations were extensive, and my favorite part was setting the table. My sisters and I collected fall leaves from our backyard to dry and press, and we set aside the prettiest pumpkins from our garden to display.

Today, the harvest still inspires my Thanksgiving decor. Here are four simple ideas to make your table stunning.

  • Long before she owned a dremel tool, my Mom used a saw to create slits in the top of walnuts to make place card holders. The color is lovely, and any tree nut can be substituted (as long as it won't roll away).

  • Pears come in an array of beautiful tones, from red to gold to green. Choose a variety that compliments your color scheme, and attach a leaf-shaped paper to the stem with a bit of ribbon or twine.

  • Pomegranates are readily available at this time of year, and their deep color adds a spark to any table. They're also sturdy and delicious. Using a paring knife, make a small cut into the blossom end of the fruit, and slide in a place card.

  • Spray paint gives mini pumpkins (real or faux) a quick makeover. I applied two coats of a golden caramel color for the pumpkin pictured. When the paint was dry, I made a cut along the top, and inserted a card. Alternatively, attach the card to the stem with a piece of string or twine.

Don't limit yourself to these ideas; take a peek around your backyard or farmer's market for a simple, nature-inspired place setting that will make this year's feast more memorable.
